My father was the captain of Deep Space Voyager Olympus
When it blipped off the screen
And beamed its last known voice transmission from Messier 13

My mother hit delete on his voiceplay, tidied up her business
And flew off in a dream
I found my cardboard spaceship jamming the particle machine

But every night, I’d build a salvage from the last ship’s unphased shards
And aim it up into the stars

Into a bright expanse of shivering eternity
Abysmal and unknown, to bring my father home
And hear his voice still ringing out across the galaxy
Beyond the panic zone, abysmal and unknown
Oh, Father please come home

My mother sat alone on a rooftop, far off in the distance
When I took up the strings
As captain of a salvage mission to Messier 13

But looking back, I saw my ship of Theseus raised in her arms
Still aiming up into the stars

Into the colors warping, blurring to infinity
In yellow, white, and red, converging ‘round my head
Our bodies warping, blurring, weaving through the galaxy
Through twisting, turning threads in yellow, white, and red

I found my father floating gently in the space debris
I let go of his hand and watched him fall to land
And in this bright expanse of passionless absurdity
I finally understand, I finally understand

I hear his voice ringing out inside of me
Disconsolate and grand, a song I understand
One day this song will warp and blur beyond our galaxy
